Catalyst Handling
Catalyst Handling is one of the major aspects that
requires adequate protection to personnel and environment. This industry
requires standard marked sanitary conditions. For this it requires the
washing and showering facilities so that dust do not build up. Moreover
eating, drinking and smoking is avoided in catalyst handling areas.
The catalyst spills are promptly cleaned and at regular intervals the
catalyst handling area is also washed. One should always try to keep the
dust generation at the minimum. To achieve this objective, hoses are used;
gutters are closed and rate of dumping for vessels/ reactors are adjusted.
Too high dumping is avoided because it may result in damaging the catalyst.
Sometimes catalyst handling is also associated with exposure to hazardous
substances. It contaminates the air. Both inhalation and skin contact of
these substances are injurious to any person. Working in this situation
requires protection. Impenetrable gloves are used with long cuffs to overlap
the sleeves and special overalls are used to avoid penetration in the work
cloths. Apart from these, rubber boots, safety glasses, facemask etc. are
used to protect oneself from hazardous substances
The work practices of this industry are to first collect the detailed
information about the catalyst to be handled and the associated hazards.
Take the manufacturer's product data sheet and/or the Material Safety Data
Sheet or equivalent. Then bring out quality plan and prepare accordingly.
Avoidance of exposure is management's top priority. Consideration should
also be taken about the wind direction of the site, the actual work,
mess-tent, sanitary facilities, field office etc.

Welding
The welding industry sounds simple but in actual it is
not so. Here the welder welds the suitable equipment as per WPS/PQR
requirements. WPS is welding procedure specification and PQR is procedure
qualification record. This WPS/PQR is passed through welding supervisor, who
is responsible for proper execution of welding activities. Proper execution
means that documentation is in order, and instructions are adhered to and
communicated in a proper manner, the results are documented and transmitted
to the responsible engineer.
The WPS is based on code requirements, material, availability of welding
equipment, welders qualification, accessibility of area to be welded, etc.
The WPS is supported by PQR. Traceability of the PQR to the WPS is to be
clear. Here WPS can have several PQR's. Overseas welding jobs selection is
based on the qualification and validity of the qualification of the welder.
In overseas welding jobs the welder who has welded the test coupon for the
compilation of the PQR is qualified for that specific WPS - PQR combination,
provided that the test results are acceptable, taking the limitations from
the essential variables in consideration. Each welder is assigned with
unique number, letter or symbol for identification.
The performance of the welding electrodes largely depend on the handling,
storage and preparation prior to use. Manufacturer's recommendations are
strictly adhered to, especially for the low hydrogen types. The welding
equipment should be in perfect working condition, including the cables and
electrode holder or gun. Polarity should also be clearly marked as well as
the scale for settings.
